A Bridge Between Routines: Two Years of Blogging

Today's entry is going to be a bit different, yet perfectly fitting into our recent discussions about routines. Not only are we facing the last weekend of March and the daylight saving time change—but my blog, this little blacksmith shop of all topics around change and project management, will be turning two years old!

These routines made it possible for this infant blog to survive its critical first 3 to 6 months. We have a fascinating case of routine dynamics here—two years ago I defined the routines, then they slowly but steadily began defining me. Now it's my turn again to reshape them.

While I've already announced that the content is slightly changing to take you along on my PhD journey (at least its exciting parts), the rhythm is also undergoing transformation. The publication date shifts from Friday to Monday. This entry therefore builds a bridge in this routine transition—on one hand, we're staying faithful to a pivotal rule of habit building: "never break the chain." We're not skipping a Friday, but reinforcing continuity. On the other hand, I'd really like to share with you the learnings from the second year of this blog's life. At the same time, being a little superstitious, I don't want to do this ahead of its time.

So here's a teaser! Stay tuned, and on Monday you will find out:

  • What I learned about building routines in the second year of my blog's life
  • What I discovered about optimizing the writing process
  • What skills writing this blog helped me develop
  • To what extent AI has supported me and what I learned about myself with AI
  • Why a newsletter is still missing
  • What's next...

With that, I wish you an incredible and sunny weekend, and I'll see you here on Monday!

Last week, I attended TechEx in Amsterdam, an event dedicated to exploring various facets of digitalization—from AI and Big Data to Cyber Security and transformation in general. It offers a glimpse into what is currently happening in the fascinating and ever-changing world of modern technologies. During several panel discussions and keynote speeches, the McKinsey study was referenced more than once – 70% of transformation and digitalization projects fail. If you look around, you'll likely find that this frightening statistic holds true. I was especially thrilled to discuss these topics with like-minded experts, and here are my takeaways: Three Issues AI Will Not Help You with (and What to Do About It)....

Over the course of several weeks, I heard in different settings and from very different people: “Defining rules and policies for the usage of AI is a nightmare! We feel really tempted to just forbid it altogether, and then the case is closed.” Some day-dream about “making the IT guys just block it.” While hearing this, I kept having a strong sensation of déjà-vu. And then I suddenly knew why! It’s shadow economy all over again!...

Welcome to the Part 2 of the short cycle of articles on Change and Resistance to Change. In this entry, “Automation Addiction – and How Agriculture Helped us Get There” we will talk about why we have such an intrinsic drive to automate things, what this drive has to do with the law of the least resistance and why breaking a habit is similar to a withdrawal. ...
